Agriculture Development


CENDECT KVK is a District level Agricultural Training, Extension and Research Institution sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Government of India.  It was started in March 1995 for benefit of farmers in Theni District.  It aims at transferring the farm worthy technologies to the farmers, farm women, rural youth and the extension workers through trainings and demonstrations. Dr.P.PATCHAIMAL is the Chairman of CENDECT KVK. Dr.S.THIRUMURUGAN is the Senior Scientist and Head of CENDECT KVK.

The main objective of the Kendra is to impart the latest technical knowledge to the farmers through work experience, employing the principles of ?Teaching by Doing? and ?Learning by Doing?. 


Technology assessment, refinement and demonstration of technology/products through the following activities of KVK.

  • On-farm testing to identify the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems.
  • Frontline demonstrations to establish its production potentials on the farmers? fields.
  • Training of farmers to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies, and training of extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development.
  • To work as resource and knowledge centre of agricultural technology for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district.
  • In order to create awareness about improved technology, a large number of extension activities will be taken up.
  • The seeds and planting materials produced by the KVKs will also be made available to the farmers.

The main activities and achievements of CENDECT KVK during the year 2015-2016 is furnished below:


On Farm Testing is aimed at testing the proven technologies evolved at Research Stations on farmers? field with their farming system perspective in view under their management and their active participation so as to convince them the relevance and viability of the new technology.

During this year 2015-16, one OFT Programme on Assessment of Tuberose Nematode Management was implemented. The needed critical inputs for the trials were given to 5 farmers and trial was carried out in an area of 2 ha.

The highest yield of tuberose flowers (129 q/ha) were recorded in polythene mulching technology of TNAU,Coimbatore but highest benefit cost ratio (3.2) was registered in IIHR,Bangalore technology of application of paecilomyces at 5 kg /ha.


The main objectives of FLD is to demonstrate newly released crop production and protection technologies and its management practice and natural resource utilization technologies  in the farmers field under different agro climatic regions and farming situations. The main idea of FLD is to increase the productivity by implementing improved crop production technologies. A total of 17 FLD programmes  were implemented during this year.

The technologies on Demonstration of Integrated Stem borer and leaf  folder management in Rice, Demonstration of IPM for Pod borer in Redgram, Demonstration of Squirrel Management in Cocoa Cultivation, Demonstration of COHM 6 Maize Hybrid, Demonstration of CO 15 Ragi variety, Demonstration of Co Cu-9 Bajra variety Demonstration of TMV 7 Gingelly with integrate crop management practices, Demonstration of CO-8 Green gram variety Demonstration of Samai Co (Samai) 4 variety, Demonstration of Co On  5 Onion, Demonstration of Cotton picking machine, Demonstration of Suitable wind break model for Banana, Demonstration of Pruning technologies with foliar spray for cashew yield maximization, Demonstration of Xanthophyll enhancement in Marigold, Demonstration of Off season flower induction in Jasmine, Demonstration of Grand supplement for dairy animal and Demonstration on Management practices in goats were implemented among  146 famers in an area of 49 ha.
In paddy demonstrated technology on integrated stem borer and leaf folder management recorded 15.36 % higher yield over farmer practice. Demonstration of Integrated pod borer management technology recorded 30.44 % higher yield over farmer practice in Red gram. In Onion CO On 5 onion seed propagation variety produced more bulb yield (38.46 % high) than bulb planting. Among the Cumbu varieties, ICMV 221 and CO Cu 9, the highest yield 15.46 q/ha (11.8 % high) recorded in CO Cu 9 than ICMV 221. In Ragi, CO 15 variety registered highest yield 13.14q/ha ie.,15.36 % higher than local variety. Off season flower induction in Jasmine produced 57.05% higher yield than conventional practice. The pruning and foliar application of nutrient in Cashew registered 46.09 % highest yield than conventional method. In Samai demonstration of newly released variety CO (Samai) 4 obtained higher yield (9.16 q/ha) than local Samai variety. Xanthophyll enhancement technologies improved flower yield (129.4 q/ha), flower quality and market price in Marigold than farmer practice. Fixing of live trap reduced the incidence of Squirrel damage and increased the yield upto 42.85 % than without live trap in Cocoa garden. Among Maize hybrids Hishell and COHM 6, the highest yield 75.69q/ha was registered in COHM 6. In Gingelly, TMV (Sv) 7 variety recorded 26.76 % higher yield than local variety. Among the Green gram cultivars KM 2 and CO 8, the higher yield (7.5q/ha) was recorded in CO 8 Green gram variety than KM 2. Suitable wind break model in Banana increased the yield by 50 % and protected the plants from wind damage.About 13.07 % milk yield increased in Dairy animals due to feeding of grand supplement. Demonstration of management practices in goat increased body weight 17.42 % higher than normal practice.


Training programmes are organized with the purpose of providing new scientific knowledge and developing new skills required for adoption of latest agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and home management technologies.

During this year, we have organized a total of 69 farmer?s trainings, 3 rural youth?s trainings and 14 sponsored trainings with the participation of 2017 farmers and Farm women, 91 rural youths and 526 sponsored trainees.


We have resented 148 Radio talks (AIR, Madurai),TV programmes and published news paper coverages in various newspapaers. We have arranged 71 Diagnostic Visits, arranged 9 Exposure Visit and 85 Field Visits.A total of  256 Farmers, farm women, rural youths, Extension workers and college students visited KVK.We have responded 556 Advisory Enquiries, arranged 5 Farmers Meeting, published 54 Extension literatures related to Agriculture and allied activities, organized 10 method Demonstrations, made 29 scientific visits to farmer?s field, made 17 Home visits, attented 477 Telephone calls, made 177 FLD and 34 OFT Field Visits, arranged 2 Farmers Tours, conducted 13 field days, delivered 38 lectures, guideded 127 Students, sent 12 SMS Messages, published 4 Popular articles, formed 2 FIGs (Farmers Interest Group) for benefitting of 50 farmers and farm women, formed 4 Farm Science Club for benefitting  80 farmers, arranged one exhibition visited by 169 farmers, organized 3 group discussion with participation of 45 farmers and  arranged one Kisan Mela for the benefit of 57 farmers.


A well established soil testing Lab is functioning at CENDECT KVK. A total of 147 soil samples, 18 organic manure samples and 108 water samples have been analyzed for the benefit of 207 farmers.


During this year, under revolving fund scheme, a total of 8q of seeds including Cumbu variety CoCu 9 Seeds ?1q, Black gram Variety MDU 1 seeds ? 2q, Green gram variety CO 8 Seeds ? 1.5q, CO 7 Red gram variety 3.5q, Maize 2q were produced and supplied to 55 farmers.

About 91000 of planting material/ seedlings including Tomato PKM 1 variety 7200 Nos, Chilli (Dry) K 1 7200 Nos, Chilli (Green) K 1 variety-7200 and onion CO On 5 - 55000 were produced and supplied to 8 farmers.

About 10 lit of Panchkavya were produced and supplied to 2 farmers. About 12.5 lit of organic pesticide were produced and supplied to 2 farmers.
